The Blind Community Center sponsors a variety of activities, all designed to provide members with opportunities for recreation, social interaction, and education. Please browse our lists of regularly scheduled and specially planned activities. If you or someone you know could benefit from our programs, please call us at 619-298-5021.

*Taught by San Diego Community College District. There will be no class on Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of Labor Day.

SEPTEMBER SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Friday, Sept. 3 • Social Night • 3 to 6 p.m.
Join us to play cards, listen to music or spots, or just socialize. Bring something from home to eat or some cash to order delivery.

Saturday, Sept. 4 • Summer Pops Concert • 5:30 p.m. to end of performance
This is the San Diego Symphony’s final pops concert of the summer. The 1812 Overture will be included, complete with fireworks and cannons. Since the show is not guide dog friendly, Linda Gwizdak, Lisa Irving, and Glenda Castle have volunteered to stay at the center and watch the dogs. Sign up with Lee at extension 208.

Monday, Sept. 6 • Labor Day
The center will be closed in observance of Labor Day.

Tuesday, Sept. 7 • Craft Classs • 9 a.m. to 1 a.m.
The craft class sponsored by the San Diego Community College District resumes for the fall semester. Crafts include ceramics, bead work, knitting and leather work. Lunch is included.

Saturday, Sept. 11 • Lunch at City Deli • 1:30 to 4 p.m.
Join us at one of Hillcrest’s most popular eateries. The atmosphere is similar to New York City delis, and the food is always excellent. The location is 535 University Avenue, at the corner of 6th Avenue. MTS routes 1, 3, 10, 11, and 120 all stop near this restaurant. Sign up by Wednesday, Sept. 8.

Monday, Sept. 13 • Chargers Support Group • 5 p.m. to end of game
We will gather to cheer on the Chargers. Due to cutbacks in Sunday bus service, this support group will only meet for Monday night games until further notice. Sign up by Friday, Sept. 10.

Tuesday, Sept. 14 • Night Walk • 6:15 to 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 15 • Board of Directors Meeting • 6:30 p.m. to end of meeting
If you wish to address the board of directors, contact President Tom Treher at 619-234-1291 at least 24 hours before the meeting. Sign up by Monday, Sept. 13.

Saturday, Sept. 18 • Ice Cream Social and Slumber Party • 6 to 8:30 p.m. or overnight
The ice cream social will end at about 8:30 p.m., but those who wish to may spend the night and be ready for the surfing trip in the morning. Bring a topping for the ice cream, which will be provided by the center. Sign up by Thursday, Sept. 16.

Sunday, Sept. 19 • Surfin' Safari • 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Join our friends from the Encinitas Lions Club, Larry Graff and Swamis Surfing Association, and San Diego Surfing Academy, for a day of surfing and fun in the sun. Lunch is included.

Tuesday, Sept. 21 • Banjo Band • 4 to 7 p.m.
Join us at the McDonald's at 5322 El Cajon Blvd. for a banjo concert. Bring some money for dinner and and enjoy a program of old-time banjo favorites. Sign up by Monday, Sept. 20.

Friday, Sept. 24 • AT&T Pioneers Spaghetti Dinner • 5 to 9 p.m.
This annual fundraiser will include spaghetti dinner, the AT&T Pioneers bake sale, bingo, and opportunity drawings. Sign up by Tuesday, Sept. 21.

Saturday, Sept. 25 • Waterskiing • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This will be our last waterskiing outing for the year. Particpants will meet at the center to board the bus to Fiesta Island, where we will be waterskiing, tubing, or just riding in a boat, as the guests of the Mission Bay Boat and Ski Club. After the water sports, our hosts will provide lunch. Sign up by Tuesday, Sept. 21.

Saturday, Sept. 25 • Membership Meeting • 4 to 7 p.m.

OCTOBER SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Saturday, Oct. 2 • 21 Annual Puppy Raisers Appreciation Luncheon • noon to 3 p.m.
The San Diego Chapter of the California Council of the Blind will sponsor this event. The food will be prepared by the Rancho Santee Lions’ Club. This event honors those who raise puppies to serve as guide dogs. The cost of the luncheon is $5, but it is free for all puppy raisers. There will be a program and an opportunity drawing. Saturday, Oct. 9 • Motorcycle Rides for the Blind and Visually Impaired • Los Angeles
Information about this event was sent out August. Sept. 10 is the deadline to sign up, through Aurora. There are only 75 motorcycles and all agencies for the blind are participating.
